Don’s journey into the advanced art of piano rebuilding began under the guidance of his mentor, Esteban Rivas.

Esteban served as the primary rebuilding technician at Robert Lowrey’s Piano Experts, Toronto’s most renowned piano gallery, for nearly three decades. While the "Golden Age" of North American piano manufacturing peaked in the early 20th century, the 1980s and 90s marked a significant era for their preservation. During this time, rebuilding these vintage masterpieces became a daily mission for premier galleries. Robert Lowrey’s stood at the center of this movement, housing an elite team of first-class technicians dedicated to restoring the handcrafted excellence of a bygone era.

Esteban’s expertise is rooted in a direct lineage of traditional craftsmanship. He was trained by a retired veteran of the legendary Heintzman & Co.—once known as the "Steinway of the North." This mentor brought genuine factory-floor experience from a time when piano making was as much an art form as it was a trade.

Don began his apprenticeship with Esteban over ten years ago. Since then, their relationship has evolved from mentorship into a deep professional partnership. Today, they continue to collaborate on complex rebuilding projects, combining decades of heritage with a shared passion for restoring the piano’s artistic and sonic beauty.
